Choosing a Wedding Photographer
Having great wedding photographs is important. After the plates are cleared away, the band packs up, and your guests go home, you can relive the day by flipping through the pages of your heirloom wedding album. Luckily there is no shortage of excellent wedding photographers in Denver. We hope that our list will help you find the best wedding photographer to record your special day.
There are many things to think about when talking with wedding photographers. Here are a few of them:
- Style: There are several styles of wedding photography: At one end of the spectrum is the traditional style, which involves capturing a relatively standard series of posed portraits of the bride and groom, parents, and members of the bridal party. At the other end is photojournalistic wedding photography, in which the photographer aims to record the events of the day as they unfold, with a few casual portraits but as little posing as possible. What style is right for you?
- What You Get: Some photographers offer package deals including a wedding album, prints, thank you cards, and so forth but keep the negatives or digital images themselves. Other wedding photographers will deliver the negatives or digital images to you, and you can get an album and prints made wherever you want. If you opt for a photographer who sells you the negatives or digital images, be sure to get a printing or "personal use" release so that you can legally make your own prints.
- Price: Wedding photography can be expensive, and some photographers offer better deals than others. But unless you're getting married on a Wednesday in November, you should not expect to save money by hiring a photographer for only a couple of hours. Wedding photographers can only book one wedding per day (or sometimes one per weekend), so if they accept your two-hour booking that would prevent them from booking a longer, more profitable event that day.
- Contract Terms: Needless to day, read the contract carefully, and be sure you understand and are comfortable with the terms before signing. As part of the contract, don't be surprised to see a model release allowing the photographer to use the images for marketing and other purposes. This is standard at all price levels; after all, what bride would hire a photographer who couldn't show her any samples? If you want a contract without a model release you should expect to pay substantially more for the privilege.
And, of course, you want a wedding photographer who is experienced; who uses top-notch equipment—and always has backups on hand; and who's there when you need them, who returns your calls, and whom you like working with.
